Why We Give
Giving is one of the key ways in which we worship God because God gave first. We see throughout Scripture that God is a giver and provides everything we need from the essentials of life, such as the food we eat and the clothes we wear, to the life transforming gift of eternal life through his Son. As we become more like Christ, we commit to modeling that same spirit of giving. One of the primary methods the followers of Christ model this giving spirit is through the returning of our tithes to God and the giving of offerings with a cheerful heart. Leviticus 27:30 (ESV) says: “Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord's; it is holy to the Lord.” We are stewards, not owners, of what God has entrusted to us. Therefore, tithing is giving back to God what is already his. God entrusts us with the remainder of our income to use appropriately.
The Difference Between a Tithe and an Offering
A tithe is a mathematical term that literally means a tenth or 10%. Giving 10% of your income isn’t merely giving something to God; it’s giving back a portion of what he first gave you. All that we have or hope for comes from the Lord. The Bible teaches that tithing is a reminder that God is the supplier of everything. Tithing also teaches us to put God first in all areas of our life. Listen to the promise of God in Malachi 3:10 (ESV): “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.” Anything given from your income above a tenth or 10% is considered an offering. This type of giving is over and above the tithe and should be done with cheerfulness. Giving beyond a tithe is an opportunity for you to be extravagantly generous, just as God has been extravagantly generous with you.
